Going on Holiday at On Off Digital World

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

It’s obvious from looking at their window display that On Off Digital World is full of technological marvels, all the latest in consumer electronics today, but their real bread and butter comes from selling to tourists some desperately needed photography equipment. Located in almost right in the middle of Manhattan, they get a lot of foot traffic from all the tourists who flock to The Big Apple day in/day out. This means that someone’s going to stop by and pick up film, lenses, and the like, and because they’re from out of town, well, it’s naturally easier to get them to pay a premium, especially for hard-to-find specialty items.

On Off Digital World Display TVs Window to World

It was everywhere, from the front page to storefront windows. Walk into any department store, with all the television sets on display, and it caught your attention right away. For me, it was at On Off Digital World that I saw the most wanted person in the world pop up on screen all of a sudden. There was no reason to pause, but even from the busy sidewalk of midtown Manhattan there seemed to be something different this time — with the word “dead” summing up the whole story. And so it was different this time, different from all the other times his face had flashed across the screen throughout all the years. Osama bin Laden had been killed. Wow. There I was, just enjoying the day, when suddenly the Global War on Terror reminded me, quite out of nowhere, that even the simplest things in life, like good weather, hang by the slimmest of threads.

Tinnitus Symptoms and Information

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

A lot of folks automatically link ringing in the ears with what is referred to as tinnitus. The high-pitched ringing is a sign of this condition, but it is essential to have an understanding of the whole story. The US National Institutes of Health has discovered that more or less 12% of adult males between 65 and 75 years have tinnitus. White people tend to be more likely to get tinnitus than other ethnic groups. Most instances of this ear condition are not life-threatening and can be disregarded. Likewise, people who observe they have the condition may only be temporarily affected as the condition will go away. Some people have it so badly that some forms of surgical or medical intervention is needed.

One type of this condition that is most common is hearing several sorts of noises that only you can pick up. But these are real dissonances that are sensed in a way that is just as genuine as anything else ordinarily heard. The number of people with serious tinnitus, in the United States, is more or less one million and it causes problems during everyday living. As we noted, the most typical dissonance is a high pitched ringing or sustained tone. But it is how loudly the sound is heard, and majority of people can function quite normally with this low pitched tone. When the sound is soft enough, then just about anything you do will cause the sound to go unobserved, or sensed.

A lot of people have this condition that creates a type of snapping noise that takes place each time the heart beats. Nonetheless, various noises can resemble a humming tone which may also take place with the heart beat. However there are other differences, such as the whirring taking place day in and day out much like the ringing noise. But the notable distinction with how serious it is relates to the degree of the interference. The great majority of individuals suffering from tinnitus do not experience this condition to an extreme point. The more you direct your attention on something else, if the tinnitus is not severe, it is extremely easy to not detect the noise.

Not all obvious signs of tinnitus predicate that there is a continuing problem. Swimmers are well-known for having water in the ear which will create the same types of interferences. While that is a basic indication of tinnitus, it is very transient and will disappear on its own. If you should have a build-up of ear wax that abruptly intervenes with normal hearing, then once again that can cause short-lived indications of tinnitus. So that is important to remember if you detect a ringing or whirring sound in your ear and wonder about it.

Other things are connected to this ear condition. When your signs are only evident to you, then that is what is referred to as subjective tinnitus. Amazingly, usually people close to you can detect the dissonance from you, and doctors call objective tinnitus which seems unusual. Objective tinnitus does not create a very loud noise because ordinarily people have to get very close to your ear, or person, to sense it.

The Jewish Way to Give

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

For many people, philanthropy is something that other people engage in – people such as billionaires. It makes sense, of course, since hardly anyone else can be expected to have the funds necessary to endow schools and hospitals.
Yet in the Jewish tradition, no matter the branch or denomination, the concept of tzedakah, literally “justice,” is commanded of all, including the poor. In Judaism, contributing to charity is a religious duty and not something done merely out of personal whim. Indeed, the very funds available for tzedakah are considered not one’s own but on loan, in fact, from the Lord. This leads to the further injunction to carefully vet all recipients to ensure that any donations made will actually work for good and not ill.

At first glance, it may sound surprising to an outsider, as with many aspects of Judaism. But – as with many aspects of Judaism, even for an outsider – there is an underlying logic that is at once compelling and beautiful. For in commanding even the poor to give, the rabbinical injunction to perform acts of tzedakah in effect empowers the poor to regard themselves as capable, too.

For what can be more empowering than to give? For to give means to share of oneself, and it even betters our natures – our love, our sacrifice, our character. It is not that poverty ennobles, but to bear poverty in righteousness: that is noble. Hence, in the Jewish tradition one need not be a successful businessman such as Isaac Toussie so as to help financially. In Judaism, making charitable contributions is not only a religious responsibility, but a right.

The real tragedy of being poor lies in not being able to help not just oneself but others as well. It is the genius of Jewish culture that even with its traditional concerns for social justice and the poor that it should recognize that even the poor can contribute!

Talk About Scrounging Up the Money for Medical School

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Located on New York City’s tony Upper East Side neighborhood, the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University is dedicated to both teaching and research. As one of the most selective of medical schools in the country, enrolling only about a hundred students per class out of some six thousand applicants in any given year. Now named after its latest and most generous benefactor – and often abbreviated simply to “Weill Cornell,” the school was partially endowed by Sanford Weill, an American banker and philanthropist who was the former executive officer and chairman of Citigroup, Incorporated. Mr. Weill and his wife donated over two hundred and fifty milion of their own money, with Mr. Weill able to raise a further hundred and fifty million through his own tireless efforts.

The school was already famous long before Mr Weill’s contributions, so it was never at a loss for donors, a veritable Who’s-Who of local, national, and even international luminaries from business, politics, and entertainment, like the famous businessman Isaac Toussie. It was the first medical school in the country to admit women alongside men. And now it’s become the first American one to operate abroad – in Education City, in fact, outside the capital of Qatar, with a campus dedicated to patient care offering a six-year integrated curriculum. The school can count many a notable physician among its alumni, great figures of research and public health such as Robert C. Atkins of Atkins Diet fame and former Surgeon General of the United States C. Everett Koop. Other famous graduates are Nobel Prize winner Robert W. Holley and Henry Heimlich of the Heimlich Maneuver.

Nevertheless, even with all the monetary support, the financial aspects of a medical education are grim, with some forty-two thousand dollars needed for the first year and thirty-eight thousand required for the second. Nevertheless, that’s a bargain considering Cornell’s law school tuition, which adds up to almost a hundred and fifty thousand dollars over four years!

Modest Swimsuits Help the Religious Enjoy the Beach

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

A lot of ladies buy modest swimsuits since they’re self-conscious about their appearance. These people imagine they’re obese and, hey, perhaps they are — but so what? Wearing them for religious reasons is one thing (which is quite a big and rather silly thing, however), but wearing them simply because you have body issues and low self-esteem?? Well, such girls should know that there are perfectly normal guys out there who actually prefer fat chicks — not only Rubenesque, but fat, like hundreds of pounds overweight! And these guys aren’t freaks, either, for the most part anyway: they simply grew up with an abiding interest in fat females…simple as that.

Modest Swimsuits and The Psychology Behind Them

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Why modest swimsuits are now ever more popular is probably because of rising religious fundamentalism wordlwide — or, rather, with the three great monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (though political Hinduism has gotten out of hand with its nationalists, too). Perhaps it’s a psychology necessary to and further accentuated by monotheism, but it would seem that recognizing one deity means recognizing only one way of doing things, of being human, and this is a mindset that would seem to most easily lead to ideology and massacre. Genocide may not be unique to monotheism, but there’s no denying that the most infamous cases in history have been perpetrated by monotheistically inspired people.

Modest Swimsuits for the Fat

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Quite often, females will wear modest swimsuits not out of religious belief but low self-esteem. In many a situation, they are fat and feel bad about it, and excessively covering up seems like the most empowering thing to do. But it’s not like they’re fooling anybody, or really hiding anything at all — for in fact there does exist men who find fat females absolutely attractive. Really! Such an idea might be incredible, but there’s no doubt about it: “fat admirers,” as they style themselves, are out there, more numerous than anyone would normally guess. But being a minority does not make them oddballs, but simply guys who have different tastes when it comes to what they find physically attractive about a girl or woman.
